In creating an art course inspired by anthroposophy we felt we could not create a program with the same tuition-based financial model that is expected today.  Set tuition encourages people to think about culture as a product they can buy like any commodity.  This is one of the most disputed and influential issues of the last 50 years of artistic innovation.  Culture is a gift when it appears, for all involved.  One of the greatest instigators of lively art and cultural activity is for those involved to recognize that it is always a kind of grace.  We have attempted to set up the flow of money which supports the work in such a way that it does not distort our work.  We wanted to create a model for the establishment of an area that is explicitly supported by freely given money, which liberates inspiration on the side of the recipient.

Thus at Free Columbia there are no set tuitions or materials fees.

All students and interested observers are regularly encouraged to donate to support the endeavor by giving now and then, pledging monthly amounts and even setting up regular deductions from their bank accounts.  All expenses are publicly displayed and communicated (see below for current expenses).  This structure provides the benefit of a kind of cultural hygiene while also being one step toward people’s financial situation not being the primary determining factor in their access to creativity and culture.

You can donate through this website.

The Free Columbia Art Course is fiscally sponsored by the Hawthorne Valley Association

All donations to the Course are tax deductible.
