Color, Cold Wax and Block Prints — A summer painting course

Color, Cold Wax and Block Prints
A summer painting course

July 24-28 or July 31- August 4

Often, we learn life lessons by working artistically. By experiencing a gesture out in the world, I see my gesture more clearly. Cold wax is a layered medium that often reveals what language the previous layers have spoken. Finding the assistance of those previous layers is exciting and often supportive.

In this workshop we will at first create block prints and then unite them into the cold wax and color. Layering over them, we may lose them, only to find them revealed later.

The technique is supportive and forgiving, very messy but not smelly.

ART DISPERSAL — 7x7 Squares by Laura Summer

On Saturday/Sunday April 22/23 from 11:30am to 5pm we will have an Art Dispersal of 49
paintings done in a square format, most have been inspired by the Love Bravely Project. All
paintings are on paper. You may reserve a painting, and paintings can be shipped. Art
Dispersal is an event where we hang up original works of art and invite people to become
their stewards. They can take a piece home, keep it for as long as they like, as well as return
it to the artist if they no longer want to keep it. Stewards are offered an opportunity to make
a contribution to Free Columbia. Contributions support the artists as well as Free Columbia.

I will be hanging the work on Friday April 21 3-7pm. You are welcome to come and take a look, and reserve a piece. The main dispersal will be on Saturday April 22 from 11:30 – 5pm.

Most of these paintings were inspired by the new music of Love Bravely, a cross-genre music project and creative community founded by rapper / singer-songwriter, Matre, in collaboration with a wide network of musicians, artists and creatives. For more information visit us on Substack. https://lovebravely.substack.com

All of these paintings are unframed, on paper and easy to ship. All paintings are on a sliding scale of $0-300.

You may choose a piece, take it home, live with it for as long as you like and make a contribution. If at some time you no longer want to keep the work you may pass it along to someone else or return it to the artist.

Contributions support Lightforms and Free Columbia and this form de-commodifies ART.

If you would like to preview the paintings you can do so at https://www.flickr.com/photos/189365346@N03/albums/72177720307113354

Artistic Research/Research as Art Moving Images in a Time of Fear

Saturday, November 26th from 2-4 pm
Lightforms Art Center
743 Columbia St, Hudson, NY 12534

Suggested contribution $10

We live in a time of unprecedented outer challenges that reveal an inner need to develop new capacities as individuals and to work on society as a whole. What are these qualities and capacities? Can art play a role in developing them? Can art midwife mobile thinking in the place of hardened and mechanistic thinking; inner freedom as well as outer freedom; empathy as well as self-assertion?

Join three artists Laura Summer, Nathaniel Williams and Michael Howard for short participatory presentations and a discussion on these themes.

This event is one of a series at Lightforms Art Center where sketches from an art project entitled “The Metamorphosis of Fear”, conceived over a century ago, involving Jan Stuten and Rudolf Steiner, will be on display. This exhibition is arranged in collaboration with Gary Lamb and the Center for Social Research. Events include three performances directed by artists Nathaniel Williams and composer Don Jamison involving new instruments for live motion pictures and original choral compositions.

Winging It – angels and other states of being

An interactive community investigation of the relationship of meaning, video and painting; what it is like to participate in the creation of art?

with Laura Summer, Sampsa Pirtola and public participation

What is it like to participate in the creation of art??

Laura Summer (painter) and Sampsa Pirtola (video artist) have previously created collaborative works of painting and video, which have included audience participation at culminating performances. In “Winging It” this interactive component will be taken a step further, as we invite community collaboration into the work from the beginning. We will start with an empty room and over the course of one month will create paintings and video in relationship to the theme “angels and other states of being”. The community will be invited to visit often and see how things are progressing. Those who are interested will also be encouraged to paint, draw and work with collage and printmaking, and to become part of the ongoing video footage that is created.

This way of working is experimental and we are excited to share it with the community, thus the title “Winging It”.

The image of the angel as we commonly know it is a prominent symbol in the Western world and beyond, from fine art to pop-culture. Angels appear in everyday language and expressions, and widely in visual culture. Although few people claim to see or experience angels (and generally their experiences are not held in high regard), the imagery and meaning that angels represent has become commonplace. This we believe gives both creative possibilities and fascinating challenges to our project.

We are interested in stepping beyond these preconceived notions to explore how people relate to the different qualities of this phenomena we call "angels" when invited to engage this subject artistically. We intend to open a space for observation, creation and qualitative experience, where together we can watch what organically emerges in the living moment. We are inspired by the work and ideas of artist Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) and his concept of Social Sculpture and The Extended Concept of Art, which we apply in our process - bearing in mind the core of Beuys' ideas: Every human being is an artist.

Across various religions and spiritual traditions, and in popular culture, angels are commonly understood to be guardians and guides of humanity. They are portrayed as beings of service, acting for the greater good rather than their own interest. In this time of global turmoil and uncertainty it can be life sustaining for people to work artistically, and this quality of dedicated service offers a deeply relevant subject to work with creatively. What does it look like to connect with a sense of transcendent support? Are human beings also capable of a similar orientation of service? Can we think and act for the greater good, and as each other’s helpers? What does art have to do with this, and how can the creative process help us experience, and potentially cultivate these qualities?
