From Laura Summer:
“In 2020 I finished 12 paintings in relation to the poetry of Hafiz. I wondered what I would do next. I am interested in questions of contemporary religious or spiritually concerned art. In our world, that is so dedicated to materialism and art as commodity, how can art speak of inner experiences in a way that feels relevant to our time? The poetry of Mary Szybist does this for me. The poems that I used explore the spiritual as it finds its way into the material. What are the aspects of this annunciation? Is it an act between a god and the woman? How does the grass feel under the woman’s knees? Does it have the mood of a garden party or of pain?
I am deeply grateful for the year of working with these poems as a painter. They have opened doors for me into the reality of being permeated by the Spirit.
During the month of this exhibit I will be working in the gallery creating a serial piece on relationship called “Red Thread”. It is composed of plywood panels in a row, as each panel is finished I will move on to the next, creating a series of relationships, occasionally rotating back to earlier panels, changing and adjusting the interaction. You are invited to visit often and see how this piece is progressing and add something into the painting yourself, materials will be provided.
In China and in Japan it’s said that before we come down to birth we are tied by a red thread to those people who will help us or who we will help. In China the red thread is tied from ankle to ankle, in Japan it’s tied around your little finger.
