ART DISPERSAL — 7x7 Squares by Laura Summer

On Saturday/Sunday April 22/23 from 11:30am to 5pm we will have an Art Dispersal of 49
paintings done in a square format, most have been inspired by the Love Bravely Project. All
paintings are on paper. You may reserve a painting, and paintings can be shipped. Art
Dispersal is an event where we hang up original works of art and invite people to become
their stewards. They can take a piece home, keep it for as long as they like, as well as return
it to the artist if they no longer want to keep it. Stewards are offered an opportunity to make
a contribution to Free Columbia. Contributions support the artists as well as Free Columbia.

I will be hanging the work on Friday April 21 3-7pm. You are welcome to come and take a look, and reserve a piece. The main dispersal will be on Saturday April 22 from 11:30 – 5pm.

Most of these paintings were inspired by the new music of Love Bravely, a cross-genre music project and creative community founded by rapper / singer-songwriter, Matre, in collaboration with a wide network of musicians, artists and creatives. For more information visit us on Substack. https://lovebravely.substack.com

All of these paintings are unframed, on paper and easy to ship. All paintings are on a sliding scale of $0-300.

You may choose a piece, take it home, live with it for as long as you like and make a contribution. If at some time you no longer want to keep the work you may pass it along to someone else or return it to the artist.

Contributions support Lightforms and Free Columbia and this form de-commodifies ART.

If you would like to preview the paintings you can do so at https://www.flickr.com/photos/189365346@N03/albums/72177720307113354

Paintings are available in person and online. If you are interested in online contact me here:

You are invited to visit often and see how this piece is progressing and add something into the paintings yourself, materials will be provided.

All paintings in this exhibit will be dispersed in an Art Dispersal on Friday/Saturday/Sunday February 25-27.

Art Dispersal: 24 paintings by Laura Summer accompanying poems by Mary Szybist

From Laura Summer:

“In 2020 I finished 12 paintings in relation to the poetry of Hafiz. I wondered what I would do next. I am interested in questions of contemporary religious or spiritually concerned art. In our world, that is so dedicated to materialism and art as commodity, how can art speak of inner experiences in a way that feels relevant to our time? The poetry of Mary Szybist does this for me. The poems that I used explore the spiritual as it finds its way into the material. What are the aspects of this annunciation? Is it an act between a god and the woman? How does the grass feel under the woman’s knees? Does it have the mood of a garden party or of pain?

I am deeply grateful for the year of working with these poems as a painter. They have opened doors for me into the reality of being permeated by the Spirit.

During the month of this exhibit I will be working in the gallery creating a serial piece on relationship called “Red Thread”. It is composed of plywood panels in a row, as each panel is finished I will move on to the next, creating a series of relationships, occasionally rotating back to earlier panels, changing and adjusting the interaction. You are invited to visit often and see how this piece is progressing and add something into the painting yourself, materials will be provided.

In China and in Japan it’s said that before we come down to birth we are tied by a red thread to those people who will help us or who we will help. In China the red thread is tied from ankle to ankle, in Japan it’s tied around your little finger.

All paintings in this exhibit will be dispersed in an Art Dispersal on Friday/Saturday/Sunday February 25-27. If you wish to reserve a piece you may do so by contacting Laura Summer laurasummer@taconic.net 518 653 2350.

Art Dispersal: Lightforms - Art and Spirit

Art Dispersal July 10, 4-9pm at Lightforms – Art and Spirit

In December 2019 Lightforms – Art and Spirit opened in Hudson New York. The opening, with over 400 people was the first fruit of three years of work by a small group of artists who were committed to the vision of an arts center dedicated to art that is inspired by spiritual questions and strivings. I was one of those artists. As the 17 months since opening have passed, I have watched as the potential of what such an art center can become stood strong in the midst of the pandemic, limited financial resources, overworked staff and volunteers, visitors from around the world and interest from the art world.

Lightforms functions something like a small museum showing work by both internationally known artists including Hilma af Klint and MC Richards and local artists. But Lightforms does not have a vast circle of support like a museum does. It relies on donations and an occasional small percentage of sales.

How is it that such an initiative can come into being, be recognized by so many people as essential to our world situation and yet to be so seriously struggling in the financial realm?

As an artist I wondered what I could do to help. I decided to offer an ART DISPERSAL.

ART DISPERSAL is a form for supporting artists, allowing people to have original art work in their homes and de-commodifying art.

You may choose a piece, take it home, live with it for as long as you like and make a contribution. If at some time you no longer want to keep the work you may pass it along to someone else or return it to the artist.

Contributions support Lightforms and Free Columbia.

I am offering this ART DISPERSAL in celebration of Lightforms, what it is and what it can become.

I have 20 of paintings completed in the last 17 months that I will make available on July 10 from 4 PM p.m. to 9 PM p.m. at Lightforms, 743 Columbia St in HudsonNY. This is the time of the second Saturday “gallery crawl” in Hudson.

If you want to preview the paintings you can do so at https://www.flickr.com/photos/189283931@N04/51240608383/in/dateposted-public/

You can also read about the inspiration for each painting here.

If you want to have a painting and make a contribution to support Lightforms but cannot be present at the dispersal contact me and we will arrange an alternative.

Travel Paintings by Laura Summer

IMG_0896.jpeg

Each painting is on unstretched canvas with a hanging rod. It can be rolled up and so can easily travel with you. Enliven the walls when you go on vacation, to the hospital, or just by moving the painting around in your house. The paintings easily hang on a push pin.

All paintings have a sliding scale of $0-300 which means you can choose an amount in that range that works for you and supports Free Columbia. Become the steward of art and bring a new form of art support into the world.

contact Laura Summer laurasummer@taconic.net to become a steward.
